Sing it, Taraji!

Taraji P. Henson has the spotlight in the new trailer for “The Color Purple.”

The musical, which hits theaters on December 25, is sharing its second trailer, which highlights Taraji P. Henson’s character, Shug Avery, singing “Push Da Button.” Along with Henson, the musical stars Halle Bailey as Nettie, H.E.R. as Squeak, Danielle Brooks as Sofia, Jon Batiste as Grady, and Fantasia Barrino as Celie in her feature film debut.

The movie is directed by Blitz Bazawule and produced by Oprah Winfrey, Steven Spielberg, Scott Sanders, and Quincy Jones. Spielberg directed the 1985 film of the same name that earned Winfrey an Oscar nomination for her role as Sofia.

“A story of love and resilience, “The Color Purple” is a decades-spanning tale of one woman’s journey to independence,” reads a synopsis of the film. “Celie faces many hardships in her life, but ultimately finds extraordinary strength and hope in the unbreakable bonds of sisterhood.”

Winfrey spoke about the movie in a video clip from the film’s set, which was shared with People.“There’s nothing that’s been more important or vital to me culturally or artistically than The Color Purple. It is a solid base of spiritual and emotional power for me,” Winfrey said in the clip.

“Every woman and man who has been invisible, who has felt unseen and unvalued, this is their story.”
