Alberta Main Street Seeks Stories on African American History

The public is invited to an informational community meeting from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at Cerimon House, 5131 NE 23rd Ave., to talk about the Alberta Main Street’s storytelling project.

The Alberta Main Street organization is seeking stories about the history of the African American community to document the history of the neighborhood through storytelling and the creation of public art, including historic place markers. Stories will be accepted through Dec. 31 and storytellers will receive a $500 stipend and will be invited to consult with the artists selected to design and install the markers.

Organizers are particularly interested in stories from current or former King, Vernon, Sabin or Concordia residents whose lives and families have been impacted by social and economic changes to the area – or stories about historically significant events that have impacted Alberta or stories that recollect a personally significant event or experience in the neighborhood.

The second phase of the project will focus on the creation of the markers, and Alberta Main Street plans to issue a request for proposals in February.
