PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A man died after being shot in Portland early Sunday amid a surge in gun violence in Oregon's largest city.

The body of the man, whose name has not been released yet, was found after police responded to a report of shots heard in the Hazelwood neighborhood, police said.

In the 24 hours between Thursday and Friday afternoons, there were seven reported shootings in Portland, with at least one person killed, police said.

Jaquan Jenkins, 26, died after being wounded in a shooting early Friday. The suspect left the scene before officers arrived, police said.

Several others were injured in the recent series of shootings, including a business owner who confronted an alleged burglar and a man who was shot in the leg in a grocery store parking lot Friday.

In response to the latest shootings, police said Friday that members of two specialized teams would work together to try to prevent shootings with high visibility patrols and increase police's response to shootings.

The shootings follow a year of a record number of homicides in Portland.

In 2021 the city recorded 90 homicides, shattering the city’s previous high of 66 set more than three decades ago.
