Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta King Awarded Congressional Gold Medal

ATLANTA (AP) - Martin Luther King Jr. and his wife, Coretta Scott King, will posthumously receive a Congressional Gold Medal this month, marking the 50th anniversary of the Civil Rights Act of 1964.

Bernice King says she and her brothers are deeply honored that their parents' work is being recognized by Congress. The gold medals are awarded each year to recognize individual achievements.

King says she is especially pleased that her mother is a co-recipient of the honor. She says Coretta Scott King was the driving force that maintained national awareness of Martin Luther King Jr.'s nonviolent philosophy and legacy.

King and her brothers, Martin Luther King III and Dexter Scott King, plan to accept the award at a ceremony in Washington D.C. on Tuesday afternoon.
