For 38 years The Skanner Foundation has hosted a gathering of community, local, state and federal leaders, for a celebratory morning that honors the spirit and legacy of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. – and to recognize the outstanding contributions of community members while awarding scholarships to promising college-bound students.

“I want to thank my readers for 50 years of serving the Pacific Northwest,” The Skanner cofounder and publisher, Bernie Foster, said.

“It’s been a privilege and an honor to allow us to report on the news – the good and sometimes not-so-good.

“We decided that the breakfast was important to us, but 50 years, for us, is a major milestone. This year, we won’t be doing the breakfast, but we will celebrate with a special, one-time newspaper event. This will be an historical newspaper. It’s a keepsake item, so I’m encouraging everyone to pick up a copy of it.”

The newspaper special issue will be a collection of some of the most important stories The Skanner has covered, as well as highlights of how the community has grown in the years The Skanner has been in print. This special issue will be researched and written by longtime former The Skanner editor Lisa Loving.
