News One Now Host and managing editor Roland Martin will be the keynote speaker at the Black Parent Initative’s 8th Annual Parent Symposium, which takes place Nov. 4.

This year’s symposium, whose theme is Today's Black Parent, includes workshops, a parent/educator panel, a Youth STEAM Explosion Event and educator’s workshop followed by an evening event with Martin, which will feature community vendors and opportunities for business networking.

The symposium takes place from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at Concordia University, 2811 NE Holman St. The event is free; lunch and child care are provided. Parent workshops include:

  • The First 1,000 Days – Kimberly Porter
  • Introduction to Parent University – Lionel Clegg
  • Empowering Your Child’s Voice – Sidney Morgan
  • Positive Discipline – Valarie Pearce
  • Responding to Trauma – Javelin Hardy
  • Making Cents (Financial Literacy) – Cobi Lewis

Martin will speak from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at Maranatha Church, 4222 NE 12th Ave.
