Black Parent Initiative

On Saturday, Feb. 23, 2019, Black Parent Initiative (BPI) will host a free event for families in celebration of Black History Month and in support of literacy at Barnes & Noble Clackamas Town Center. The Black History Month book fair and cultural literacy event features book giveaways, local Black author readings and plenty of activities, food and drawings. Also, a portion of sales made at any Barnes & Noble using book fair ID#12368940 will allow BPI to purchase more culturally-specific books to be given away to families in the community.

BPI hosts about 400 attendees during There will be STEM, literacy and art activities taking place on both floors of the book store. Partners at OMSI, Portland Children’s Museum, Portland Community College STEM Center and PlaywellTEKnologies will be providing the STEM stations. Mystique’s Fancy Faces will be adorning attendees with face paint and PACKY Academy will be creating culturally-specific works of art with the families. This year’s featured authors are Valarie Pearce (A Bucket Full of Dreams), Josie Parker (Obie the Changeling) and Brian Parker (Darren Strider Bumblebee Rider). Each child attending story time will take home an autographed copy of the book read.
