Portland resident, Myrtle Wilson celebrates 100 years of life Saturday, September 27, 2025.

Myrtle, along with her husband Ervin Wilson Sr. (deceased 2013) originated from Lubbock, Texas, and moved to Portland, Oregon in 1944 to work in the shipyards. Having survived the Vanport Flood in 1948, the Wilsons moved to Eugene. There they founded the New Jerusalem Church of God in Christ. And years later the Greater Peace Church of God in Christ in Portland (1979-2013). Well known for her roles in the church and as a beloved childcare giver, many know Myrtle though her son, late Portland Blues musician, Ervin “Benny” Wilson (organ) of Geneva’s in North Portland, the Mt. Hood Jazz and Waterfront Festivals in the 1980s-2000s.

Myrtle will be surrounded by friends and family on her 100th birthday.
