In the wake of Wednesday’s violent attack on the U.S. Capitol, U.S. Rep. Earl Blumenauer (D-OR) has demanded the resignations of House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) and House Republican Whip Steve Scalise (R-LA) for their role in inciting a mob to violence and insurrection and their subsequent efforts to overturn the results of the Electoral College.
Congressman Blumenauer, who was also among the first to call for a second impeachment of President Trump, issued a statment saying:
“As our House majority works to hold the president accountable for his egregious actions, we also need to ensure our Republican colleagues acknowledge and accept the consequences for their own involvement in encouraging this insurrection.
"We cannot have unity and healing with conspiracy theorists and others who would subvert our democracy and tear our country apart.
"The fact that Kevin McCarthy and Steve Scalise continued to peddle false and inflammatory theories even after the violent riot that threatened our democracy and the lives of Vice President Pence, members of Congress, and Capitol staff forfeits any right they have to be in government.
"They should resign in shame.”
