PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) _ Some Oregon doctors are heading for the nation's capital with a message -- give Americans universal health care now.
The doctors want Congress and the Obama administration to put a single-payer plan on the table, saying it is the only way to provide all Americans with basic care and avoid bankrupting the country.
The latest proposal from Congress came Monday when Sen. Max Baucus, a Montana Democrat, pushed a plan that would include an insurance industry fee to help pay for covering the uninsured.
But the Oregon doctors say the best way to keep health care affordable in the long run and to cut costs is to make a switch to universal care.
The physicians are holding a rally Tuesday morning in downtown Portland at Pioneer Courthouse Square to kick off their trip to Washington, D.C.
