Methany Thornton, a Marietta Middle School teacher, and her family were recently surprised with a fully furnished home. The iTHINK Community Foundation of iTHINK Financial surprised the new homeowner and her family with a decorated house. After the surprise, Thornton, her husband, Kelcey, and their daughter and two grandsons toured the furnished rooms and said the house was now their new special place.

“It took a lot of partners to bring this accomplishment to fruition today,” said Jessica Gill, CEO of Habitat for Humanity of NW Metro Atlanta, in a statement. “Living where you work is a key component in building community, and partnerships like this one are fundamental to make local homeownership achievable, as well as thanking the public servants who serve us and our children.”

The credit union Berkadia also presented Thornton and her husband with a $500 check for anything they might need when moving into their new home. Thronton is a Social Emotional Learning Teacher at Marietta Middle School, where she has taught for more than six years. She’s also a cheerleading and lacrosse coach for kids.

Some of Thornton’s students came to show support when she received her house. The family, beforehand, was living in Cartersville, Georgia, in a townhouse without a yard for their grandchildren to play in. Now, they have a bigger home with more space and Thornton lives just minutes from work.

“Thank you for all that you do in the community for people like me,” Thornton said. “You truly are God-sent, and I pray that as you continue to bless others, God will bless you even more.”
