The Republican is a former sheriff who once was the face of justice in rural Polk County. He is now also the face of mercy. Democratic Gov. A growing number of states are working to keep food out of landfills over concerns the waste is taking up too much space and posing environmental problems. Globally, about a third of food is wasted. In the United States, it’s even higher, at 40%. California and some others have passed laws requiring food waste to be composted while others including New York require supermarkets and other businesses to redirect food to food pantries. A national Black Lives Matter nonprofit that was widely criticized for purchasing a sprawling California mansion with donated funds recently opened the property to dozens of families who lost loved ones in incidents of police violence. The foundation says it plans to hold future events that align with its mission of eradicating white supremacy and improving Black lives.
