Johnny B. Newton, affectionately known to his friends and family as John or Johnny B, peacefully began his next great journey on January 3, 2026, leaving behind a blueprint for a life exceptionally well-lived. John was a man of gentle strength, unwavering discipline, and above all—immense heart for family. Originally from Malone, Texas, John moved to Portland, Oregon as a teenager and it ultimately became his forever home.

A man with impressive skills and calm intelligence, John enlisted and served his country as a member of the U.S. Air Force. After returning from the service, he held a variety of jobs in the Portland area before earning a position with the International Longshore and Warehouse Union (ILWU), where he built his career of more than three decades until retirement. He had a natural, intuitive way with numbers and a sharp mind that earned him the utmost respect throughout every shipyard he graced.

John’s true mission and his first love was family, and he cherished what it meant to be there for one another. A fierce advocate for education, he believed that learning was the key to opening every door in life. He took immense joy in seeing his children and grandchildren lead with their minds.

John is survived by his children Delbert C. Newton, Margaret LaJewel Newton Lewis and Dawn Newton-Smith (Marichal); bonus daughter Angela Branch; siblings Harvey Garnett, Albert Garnett, Robert (Bobby) Garnett, and Beverly Hunter (Charles); grandchildren Leonard Jett, Brittani Newton, Chauncey Lewis, R. Marichal Smith II, and Jaelyn Smith; eight great grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.

The family wishes to express our deepest and sincere appreciation for every prayer and condolence given, card received, and expressions of love. Each day, we will continue to honor and celebrate his legacy of strength and wisdom.
