PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) -- The woman who attacked author and former Skanner News boxing columnist Katherine Dunn is headed to prison for 26 months for violating her probation.
Brandy Amber Carroll, 25, was sentenced on Monday. She was already on probation for stealing when she tried to steal Dunn's purse on Nov. 24.
Dunn, who has long written about and trained with boxers, said the woman kicked her in the shin and slapped her face when she refused, so Dunn started punching her assailant as hard as she could with her right hand. Dunn said she would normally have led with her left hand, but that was all tangled up in the purse strap.
On Monday, Carroll said she wanted to apologize to Dunn, but because of hearing delays, Dunn had left the courthouse before Carroll's appearance. Carroll admitted after her arrest to being a heroin user. She will be eligible to reduce her prison time by 30 percent for good behavior.
Dunn is best known for her novel "Geek Love."
